Sexual acting out can be defined as any form of sexual behavior whose primary function is to avoid uncomfortable feelings and other realities. With affairs, the behavior is essentially an intimacy disorder that presents as a failure to pair-bond. For most addicts, arousal is challenging to achieve in a relationship based on intimacy where the addict is escaping the intimacy of their partner into the safety of a less intimate encounter. Treatment would require the termination of the affair and a clinical exploration of the addict’s anxiety around intimacy and attachments.
